BG by Masterplug Junction Box

Type: Tech

Overall: 76% | Quality: 8 | Value: 7

On receiving this I noticed the junction box came with an RCD plug which is great and saves me having to buy one myself. The RCD plug helps in many ways. For example it helps protect you from getting electrocuted.

The overall quality was fairly good but it did not come with all the features I would usually find common place in other D.I.Y. products such as screws. The mount on the back could be annoying for some.

After a bit of messing around and looking in my shed for screws, etc. I was ready to go. Simple to wire and all working good – there’s even a spot for a padlock. Not a bad product.

Cyclone Primus by Sumvision

Type: Tech, Media Player

Overall: 53% | Quality: 3 | unique: 4 | Value: 4

On receiving this I put a fresh HDD inside it then put some music, photos and videos onto that. After playing around with it a bit I couldn’t help but feel disappointed.

Firstly; the remote had to be facing directly toward the unit and even then it hardly noticed the commands. I thought I would ignore this one issue as the unit is cheap.

It lacks in all kinds of services and settings I would normally expect from a similarly priced Media player.

After Swapping the HDD’s a couple of times, this device literally broke on the bottom which means I have to throw the device away as it is very dangerous to have around.

Do I recommend this? No. Pay a little extra and buy a decent media center.

Archos 80 Cobalt

Quality: 7/10 Packaging: 8/10 Value: 8/10

Looking at the package we can see what is in store – it’s 8 inch, can play back 1080p, and has a 1.6GHZ CPU. So how accurate is this packaging and how well does it cope?

Turned it on and it gave me the option to install all the archos bloat or go vanilla and keep it clean, I chose to go vanilla. It booted up with the usual and I swiped around the screen and noticed next to no lag at all which was a surprise because a year or so ago all android tablets lagged horribly.

You can play videos okay, though you can run into lag if  you do too much at the same time, which is to be expected from this type of device. The good news is; it has the real play store! This one has a very fast CPU which is useful for everything in general, but more specifically – games. This is nothing short of amazing value and is definitely great for most of the family. I wholly recommend this tablet.

Overall: 71%.

DS212J Diskstation by Synology

Type: Tech, NAS

Overall: 93% | Quality: 7 | Value: 7 | Suability: 9

Today I review one of my favorite tech gadgets of all time; a NAS device (short for Network Attached Storage) though for these devices NAS is an understatement as some can do so much more and even some server related tasks. Maybe we should call them SNAS! (Hope the Nintendo fans see what I did there).

On unboxing – we can see there is the standard “Power Supply” unit, along with a UK plug, 1 ethernet(RJ45) cable, screws and a manual.D832A0ED-17F1-4128-A02A-34F8B2D2D55B

Here is the actual NAS! so, what do I need to do before starting this actual review? Throw a HDD in and connect it all up. You notice the manual? Well – seeing as I am a computer builder I decided to throw it in the box. It was easy as anything to install Hard drives in, I can imagine even people who have never done it before will even find it easy too.

Simply slot the Hard Drive(s) in, screw it in place and then put the cover on after. It really is that simple.

It’s all plugged in and started fine. I logged into the web-based GUI to play around with it and I must truly say – the “OS” is beyond amazing. it is perfect and even more than I would expect for a NAS. This thing has so many functions that you will be on it tinkering for ages.

Onto the hardware front – it’s lacking. The software may be amazing and you can do all sorts with it but you definitely notice the lag and the system takes a fair few minutes to boot and you wont be able to have tons of “applications” in use at one – maybe 4-6 which is fine for most NAS devices but Synology are pushing beyond boundaries in every other area, it’s just a shame that the main thing holding this device back is the RAM(256mb) and CPU(800mz) specifications. I feel that any modern NAS needs 512mb RAM or more to be able to handle all tasks thrown at it and the CPU is just always at 100% and cripples the device and it essentially needs to be twice as fast.

Are there any other issues? No. None at all. it’s all good from here!os

The DS212J Diskstation carries out all tasks with no issues and is extremely reliable. You can access all your music, films, photos from any device. Want to watch a few films on an iPad? No problem. Want to watch your house with connected security camera while you are abroad? No problem.

The best thing about Synology is the amount of care they put into these devices and they really do seem to care about customers too which is refreshing compared to some other NAS companies.

One of the most important thing about getting a NAS from Synology is the mobile and tablet apps at hand. No one even competes in this department.C9D9ECB7-EFC9-4D9F-9BBD-E64254638F24

There are separate apps for Music, Films, Photos, Files, Surveillance and an app to tell you some statistics of your NAS. All of them are what you would expect to see on a windows PC – some such as the music app goes above and beyond.

This device is truly amazing and if you dont mind the low-ish specs I will definitely recommend it!

Scout 2 by STM Bags

Type: Bag

Overall: 92% | Quality: 9 | unique: 8 | Value: 8

Let’s start with a little story. Go get a nice cup of coffee ready and sit down to get relaxed for an epic tale. One day I was dragging around a huge, heavy, and ugly looking shoulder bag and it was very annoying to carry for more than 10 minutes. I stumbled across STM bags in the past a ton of times but always thought to myself that all my “junk” wouldn’t dare fit in one of the bags I was eyeing up. This is the adventure of me finding a magical bag that really can fit all my junk in. I’m joking about the tale stuff – I think I have been playing too many video games today. But let’s get onto the review.

I received the bag I liked the look of a lot called Scout 2 and as you can see from the picture above – it is small in size, especially compared to my other bag. I have been thinking about migrating from a huge, heavy bag to a smaller bag for ages but have never been inspired enough to do it. Until I saw this. For people who know me well, you know I carry almost everything with me. So how could I fit it all in here? Well. I won’t say exactly what is where yet because I want to save that for an article in the future!

This can fit a 13″ laptop in and iPads fit in just fine too. Let’s talk about the features. On the back of the bag there is a cutout storage area with a zip at the bottom – I don’t have a clue exactly why there is a zip at the bottom but I have found it useful when I am sitting in a coffee shop somewhere and want to get a notepad out fast I simply unzip and the jobs done.

The strap is a fair lengh and I really love how easy it is to manage. The shoulder guard is huge and comfy beyond belief no matter how much weight I have put into this bag. Let’s open up the clip on the front to have a little look inside.

There is a left and right pouch. On the left is a general space for any goods. On the right is an area for pens and some space still available for other uses. There is a zip just above the pouch area with plenty of deep space. Above the zip is an open area which could be used for anything, even a laptop/tablet would be fine there but I personally use it for a notepad.

Then there is a velcro area for laptops or tablets. This area is one of the most impressive things about this bag for me. It is so thick and protective. I wouldn’t cringe at all if I had a laptop fall of a table in this bag because I know it’s got me covered.

This bag is truly awesome and I would definitely recommend you get one. Especially if you want to downsize and still have plenty of space. My old bag was 17″, this is 13″ and fits everything my old bag had in it. Keep an eye out for my follow-up blog on what I always keep in my bag. I think you might just be shocked by how amazing this bag is.

7-Port USB3 hub by Plugable

Type: Tech

Overall: 83% | Usability: 9 | Packaging: 8 | Value: 7

Plugable sent me one of these to review. So here I am. The packaging was great – on opening it up, it reminded me of an apple product. Very clean and neat looking. Because i’m from the UK I was worried about what plug it would come with.

It came with a european one. Oh, and a UK one too!! Handy. I could use the UK one at home and keep the EU one in a travel bag.

BF7D8A4C-68AF-48CA-BFAE-47B7FCB5C857Contents: USB3 unit, UK AND EU plugs, USB cable, Manual.

The features on it are great – when you have a USB using some juice plugged in a blue light appears making it easy to troubleshoot devices. When I read the description it said about not being able to charge apple devices which saddened me but I thought I should try it any way. Guess what? It does charge them! Phew!

This is an awesome USB hub for consumers, but I do hope they make a wall mountable unit in the future for us with servers or network units. Overall – this is an amazing USB hub and I would definitely recommend it if you have the space.

Cafe HAG crema decaff T-Disc review

Overall: 78% Aroma: 6 Taste: 8 PPC: 24p

The ever so rare decaff review is here. Will this live up to the caffeinated counter-part?

Yes and no. The taste is okay at first which makes this equal to its caffein fueled sister, until; of-course the after taste kicks in. It goes from nice to a slightly “gutter” aste.

Its a shame because this could have easily of reached the 85-90% score point if it wasnt for the poor after taste.
